Early Life and Education
Senior Chief Darryl Carter was born on May 21, 1984, in Chicago, Illinois. He
graduated from Neal F. Simeon Career Academy in 2002. He later achieved his
associates degree and his Bachelors in business administration at American
Military University.
Military Career
Shortly after high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy. Following
basic training, he completed Seamanship Apprentice Training in Great Lakes,
Illinois, and was assigned to the USS Herald F. Stout (DDG-55) in Norfolk,
Virginia. He earned his Enlisted Surface Warfare qualification during his first
deployment in 2005.
In 2006, he cross-rated to Damage Controlman and earned the
title of Junior Sailor of the Year. He participated in a significant crew swap
among guided missile destroyers, serving on the USS Gonzalez (DDG-66) and USS
Laboon (DDG-58) during deployments in the Middle East.
In December 2008, he transferred to Norfolk Naval Brig, where
he pursued an Associate’s Degree at Tidewater Community College and American
Military University. He later served as the Receive and Release Coordinator at
NAVCONBRIG Chesapeake.
He then transitioned to the Pre-Commissioning Unit Arlington
in January 2012, commissioning the USS Arlington (LPD-24) in February 2013. He
achieved the rank of Petty Officer First Class in 2014 and took on various
leadership roles, earning multiple qualifications and pins.
In August 2016, he arrived at Surface Warfare Officer School
Unit (SWOSU), where he made Chief and led significant improvements to the
Damage Control 'A' School program, managing a $1.3 million budget expanding the
course from five to 15 days. As the CMEO during his tenure, his leadership
resulted in zero equal opportunity and sexual harassment cases during his
tenure.
Recent Assignments
Darryl later served at Afloat Training Group Middle Pacific, becoming the
Departmental Leading Chief Petty Officer of Mobility Damage Control. He earned
the Afloat Trainer of the Quarter award and achieved his Advanced Education
Voucher that allowed him to complete his Bachelor's degree in Business
Administration.
In 2022, he took his first tour at sea as the Leading Chief
Petty Officer of R-Division on the USS Mustin (DDG-89) and made DCCS in 2023,
transferring to the USS Tripoli (LHA-7) shortly after and achieved the rating
of CMDCS.
Awards and Recognition
Senior Chief Carter's personal decorations include three Navy and Marine Corps
Commendation Medals, five Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, six Navy
Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on
Terrorism Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, and various service
ribbons.
